The power of autumn is undeniable. Across the world and cultures, autumn (especially the Fall Equinox), is a time of ritual celebration. During the first day of fall, the sun enters the sign of Libra, which is represented by the scales of balance.
With such vibrant energy abound, now is the time to focus on balance and what this means to you and your life. To be balanced means that you have a handle on the various elements in your life and don’t feel that your heart or mind are being pulled too hard in any direction. More often than not, you feel calm, grounded, clear-headed, and motivated. To be truly balanced, or to bring balance and a sense of peace into one’s life, one has to make sure they are taking care of themselves first.
Decelerate
Are you finding yourself constantly rushing from one task to another? Do you find yourself constantly saying how you have no time, or are too stressed? Would you be shocked if we told you there is a way to manage your time and relieve yourself from the weight of stress you feel? Well, there is. When you’re in a constant rush, what’s happening is that your own needs are getting lost in the shuffle, and more and more you become detached from living in the moment. Taking care of your needs gets lost, and this causes undue stress as you’re conditioned to not have any time to relax.
The key to solving this is to prepare. I know you’re thinking that there isn’t any time to prepare, but that’s a lie we tell ourselves. It’s time to slow down. Practice waking up one hour earlier every morning (if one hour seems too early, start slowly and wake up 30 minutes earlier). Give yourself time to get ready slowly, have some healthy breakfast without rushing, and get on your way at a reasonable hour without rushing. This in itself does wonders with setting up your day. Your outlook will completely change.
Another area of your day you can take advantage of is your lunch hour. If you find yourself stressed out, you may very well be working through your lunch hour as well. This needs to stop. Take your lunch break to sit down and eat and do something relaxing – take a walk, or read. Take your time off of your job for a moment and give yourself the chance to recharge. This is another way to make an impact on your wellbeing and relieve stress.
Make “Me” Time
When you’re constantly jumping from one responsibility to the next, it’s not surprising that we forget to take time to do things that we truly enjoy and bring us fulfillment. Find a time during the week where you have an hour or two free and devote this time to taking care of YOU. Treat yourself to something you love—is it enjoying a meal out? A class? Going to see live music? Getting a pedicure? Enjoying an exercise class? The possibilities are endless.
Make Quality Time
While it’s important to first take care of yourself, it’s also incredibly important to remember to make time for and cherish the ones you love. Many of us spend a significant portion of our day at work, so by the time we’re done, we just want to get home and do nothing. This kind of exhaustion means that we take advantage of the ones we love, thinking that they’ll always be there. Always try to remember that while we work to support ourselves, our lives outside of the office are more important. It’s crucial to find a good work/life balance.
Consider making time in your day to call friends or family to check in regularly, or go visit relatives if possible to catch up. Surprise your partner with a fun date night you’ll both enjoy, or plan an activity with your family that is different from the norm. Investing this time in family and friends not only tells them how much they mean to you, it makes everyone feel much closer and happier.
