The first day of Aries, marked by the beginning of the Spring Equinox, is set to begin on March 20th, 12:15 PM, EST. As the first sign in the Zodiac, Aries is also the Cardinal Fire sign, which is derived from the French word “cardo,” meaning “that which hinges.” This is where the hinges on the doors of Springtime open wide, with great fortitude and a sense of conquest (unless you’re in the Tropic of Capricorn – the Southern hemisphere – in which case, it is the Autumn Equinox).
Aries, The Ram, represented by the Emperor card in Tarot, reminds us of the cycle of life, which is epitomized by the Springtime call to bring forth new life. Through resilience, dedication and the can-do nature of action, Aries tills the earth, sows and waters the seeds, and creates the first blooms of Spring. The Emperor reminds us that fortitude is a culmination of moving forward with a plan, conquering any obstacle that may arise and bringing this plan to fruition through will and force. Aries seeks virtue in its endeavor, and will even resort to destruction to fulfill its resolve. It understands the necessity of such destruction: to remove that which is old to form the new. Thinking of the Earth as a conscious being makes understanding the nature of the Seasons easier, especially when there is an understanding that the Earth creates a purpose for itself – to become green and lush after the effects of winter. This is where the Earth has its most virtuous purpose. It uses its powers to enable a beautiful initiative of birth and rebirth, and creates the harmonies that Spring provides.

Below the surface of thousands of acres of earth, dropped by birds indigenous to the Western United States, from California to Nevada and down to Arizona, lie wild tobacco seeds, dormant and waiting to germinate. Beyond the unforgettable images of towns turning to hellscapes engulfed in flames when the trees turn to ash and the ground is scorched, a most amazing thing happens to these seeds. The process of germination occurs, made possible only by the wildfires, ironically, and as a jest from nature itself before the punchline: a beautiful flower which blooms to perfection. Some of the tobacco seeds are dormant for 80-100 years before the fate of fire engulfs them and this creates a significant beauty in the region.
This is but another reminder of the ways that Aries comes full circle: it recreates life through the same position that was used to burn it down – which most typically is a careless person throwing a cigarette, made from tobacco, into a climate so dry that it has no choice but to transform through destruction. This is a solid reminder of what each of us can do to recycle old energies that don’t serve the goals we wish to achieve. Holding tight to a resolve of achieving our individual goals and understanding the many options that we have to create is very important at this time. Aries will end on April 20th.
Want to find out what retrograde has in store? Give us a call!
Aries has a profound effect this year, because of other astrological and astronomical factors, such as the Blue Moon in Libra on March 31, as well as the Mercury retrograde in Aries from March 22nd through April 15th. This can create procrastination and will make communication sometimes a bit heated. For many, this can easily see temper tantrums, arguments and other such flare-ups. This particular retrograde will also create the tendency to jump to conclusions, unwarranted, which should be consciously thought of with caution.
Fortunately, Venus is placed in Aries until the 31st, the same day as the Blue Moon, which will help to stabilize friendships and see rifts and tiffs overcome more easily. Even more fortunately, on the 31st, Venus moves into Taurus, which will stabilize the position of the Planet of Love and create more forward positions in communication. For some, this will negate the more destructive Aries tendencies, when caution isn’t kept front and center. For this Aries season, even if utilizing destruction is feasible, remember to be patient and to be kind, no matter who you are dealing with. The benevolent Emperor kept a much happier kingdom than the malevolent Emperor, and cooler heads during this Mercury retrograde will definitely prevail.
If you are a Water sign, the beginning of Aries will make you feel your blood needs to boil. That’s okay. Focusing your frustration on something constructive is one of the best things you can do to bring a more even temperament. For Earth signs, this is likely to create a scorched earth scenario with those that you have disagreements with. But Venus moving into Taurus will stabilize these tumultuous positions. Air signs will find it easier to deal with this particular retrograde, as will Fire signs. Remembering to be patient, not rushing, and truly going with the flow is an Aries virtue that helps make the path less bumpy and carries us for a smoother ride.
